The Yemeni turban is an accessory that completely transforms an outfit — but you need to know how to tie it. We present 4 techniques, from the simplest to the most elaborate.

Before starting: preparing the turban

A Yemeni turban usually measures between 180 and 220 cm. Before any tying:

  • Run your hand along the fabric to smooth out major creases.
  • Fold it lengthwise to obtain a band about 30-40 cm wide. This is the base for all styles.

1. The simple knot (beginner, 30 seconds)

Ideal to start with and for daily use:

  1. Place the middle of the turban on your forehead.
  2. Bring the two ends behind your head and cross them.
  3. Bring them forward and simply tie on the side.
  4. Hide the remaining end under a layer for a neat finish.

This knot is discreet and holds all day without adjustment.

2. The wrapped knot (intermediate)

More voluminous, more traditional:

  1. Place one end on the top of the head, letting about 20 cm hang down.
  2. Wrap the rest of the turban around the head, gradually moving upward.
  3. You get several visible layers that add volume.
  4. Tuck the final end into one of the layers.

3. The tail knot (authentic Yemeni style)

The most recognizable — with an end that falls over the shoulder:

  1. Place the turban on your head leaving a long end (40-50 cm) hanging over the right shoulder.
  2. Wrap the rest around the forehead then the back.
  3. Tuck the short end under the layers.
  4. Deliberately leave the long end free — this is the signature of the style.

4. The quick knot without wrapping

For a casual look when you're in a hurry:

  1. Fold the turban into a triangle.
  2. Place the base of the triangle on the forehead, the point at the back.
  3. Cross the two ends at the back, bring them forward, tie on the side.

General tips for a turban that stays in place

  • The longer the fabric, the longer the knot holds.
  • If you have short hair, add a thin cotton band under the turban to prevent slipping.
  • Don’t tighten too much at the temples — a turban should hold without compressing.
